Route Overview

Lands End is one of San Francisco’s best-kept running secrets. This coastal trail winds through Monterey cypress groves along dramatic ocean cliffs. The trail is mostly dirt singletrack with some rocky sections — perfect for trail runners looking for a taste of wilderness without leaving the city.

Directions

  1. Start at the Lands End Lookout visitor center (Point Lobos Ave)
  2. Take the Coastal Trail heading east toward the Golden Gate Bridge
  3. Pass Mile Rock Beach overlook and the labyrinth
  4. Continue to Eagles Point for Golden Gate Bridge views
  5. Turn around or continue to China Beach
  6. Return via the same trail or loop back along El Camino del Mar

Tips

  • Trail can be muddy after rain — wear trail shoes
  • Some sections have steep drop-offs — stay on the path
  • The labyrinth at Eagles Point is worth a quick stop
  • Bring a headlamp if running early — the trail is shaded and dark in spots
  • Free parking available at the Lands End Lookout lot (fills up on weekends)

Best Time to Run

Weekday mornings are ideal. The trail gets busy with hikers on weekends. Winter months offer whale-watching opportunities from the cliffs.
