About the Race

The San Francisco Marathon is the crown jewel of Bay Area distance running. The course takes runners across the Golden Gate Bridge, through the Presidio, along the waterfront, and through Golden Gate Park. It’s one of the most scenic marathon courses in the world.

Course Highlights

• Cross the Golden Gate Bridge at sunrise (the bridge is closed to cars for runners!)
• Run through the Presidio’s eucalyptus groves
• Flat miles along Crissy Field and the Marina
• Finish at Mission Bay with bay views

Race Tips

• Start conservatively — the bridge crossing has a significant climb
• Expect fog and wind on the bridge, even in July
• The second half through Golden Gate Park can feel lonely — bring headphones
• Aid stations every 1.5 miles with water and Gatorade

Registration

Early bird pricing typically opens in October for the following year’s race. Prices increase as the event approaches. The race usually sells out by May.
