About the Race

Bay to Breakers is more than a race — it’s a San Francisco institution. Since 1912, this 12K run has taken runners from the bay side of the city to the ocean breakers at Ocean Beach. It’s equal parts competitive footrace, costume party, and city-wide celebration.

Course Highlights

  • Start downtown at the Embarcadero
  • The infamous Hayes Street Hill at mile 2 — the race’s biggest challenge
  • Run through Golden Gate Park’s Panhandle
  • Flat finish along JFK Drive to Ocean Beach

What Makes It Special

  • Costumes are encouraged (and legendary) — think coordinated group themes, elaborate builds, and creative absurdity
  • Competitive runners start in the elite corral for a legitimate race experience
  • The tortilla toss at the Hayes Street Hill is a decades-old tradition
  • After-party at Ocean Beach with live music

Race Tips

  • Don’t go out too fast — Hayes Street Hill will humble you
  • Wear comfortable shoes, even if your costume makes that difficult
  • Arrive early — road closures make getting to the start tricky
  • This race doesn’t have net time — your corral position matters
